In the End Times, Who Walks Beside Me?
Last night, I discovered another bit of international news. The crisis between Russia and Ukraine continues, and tensions in the Middle East do not appear to be diminishing. I put down my phone and sighed. Oh, what is happening in this world?
We constantly take peace for granted, until one day the shadow of war appears on our doorstep. Looking at the devastation and fleeing masses in the news, I can't help but wonder: if similar scenes appeared around us one day, what would I do?
Scenes from post-apocalyptic films keep flashing across my thoughts. Cities that were once bustling have been reduced to ashes, with skyscrapers turned to rubble and streets hushed and desolate. The sky was enveloped in heavy smoke, making sunshine a rare sight. The thought sends shivers down my spine.
If that day comes, I believe the scariest thing will be the bone-deep loneliness and powerlessness, more than the lack of food or clothing. Who might be my buddy in this world of unknowns and dangers?
Right then, my dog emerged out of nowhere, gently placing its head on my knee. I caressed its head absentmindedly, understanding that if the world did end, the one I'd want by my side would most likely be it.
This concept warms my heart. Yes, if that day comes, at least I'll be prepared. We might forage for food together in the ruins and keep an eye out for danger at night. Most importantly, we could keep one other company and provide comfort to one another.
I recall reading papers that claimed canines evolved from wolves. In other words, their forefathers were specialists in survival in the wilderness! This makes me feel more confident. My dog would undoubtedly adjust fast to the new environment.
However, it is true that keeping a dog is more difficult than keeping a cat. They require greater nutrition and regular exercise. However, in a world of finite resources, these features of dogs may prove advantageous. It could help me hunt small animals or pull carts to transfer items. I believe smart feeders and water dispensers are out of the question.
This makes me laugh. Goodness, I'm seriously considering surviving the apocalypse! This must be the result of viewing too much news and movies.
However, if you think about it, this question isn't so crazy. Who can ensure that the conflicts and calamities that are taking place around the world would not affect us? This hypothesis makes me recognize what I value most in the world. Yes, if I had to confront the worst-case scenario, I would like to have a devoted partner at my side, a buddy who would not desert me.
My dog seemed to feel my emotions and approaches to lick my hand again. As I stroke its velvety fur, my heart is filled with appreciation.
Whatever the future holds, we still have each other. Maybe this is the most valuable gift. Looking out the window at the serene view, I silently pray that international conflicts would end soon and people can resume their normal lives.
Tomorrow, I'll take it to the park to play. After all, who knows what the future brings? Perhaps the most important thing we can do in these trying times is to enjoy the present moment and be compassionate to the people and animals around us.
How about you? If that day arrives, who do you want to face it with? And in times of peace, how should we value everything we have?
